Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Bridge spawns tourist inflow in Roing

[ Karyir Riba ]

ROING, Jul 24:   With the opening of the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Bridge that connects Assam and Arunachal, there has been a surge in tourism inflow at Roing town.

The first Sunday after the bridge's opening came as a shocker as the roads were jammed right from the market area to the Eze River, causing one of the worst traffic jams the town had ever seen. Now, it has become a usual thing, especially during the weekends.

Taking the opportunity, Agni Mihu, a local youth, has taken the initiative to promote the Idu-Mishmi culture, while also giving the tourists a chance to get closer to the local traditions.

Mihu, along with his team, has started a rental service wherein tourists can try on the Idu-Mishmi traditional attire and ornaments, and get photographed, to make their visit to the district even more memorable.

Mihu, who is a photography enthusiast and the founder of Dibang Photography Club, says that it was this passion of his that had initially brought the idea to his mind. To give meaning and an objective to his passion of photography, he planned this service which would promote the Idu-Mishmi culture and bring the community to the eye of the rest of the country.

"The local attire, because of its intricacy in craftsmanship, is very highly priced, making it difficult for all tourists to procure. Thus, the rental service seems most apt for both the tourists and promotion of the local attire", said Mihu.

"We have had tourists coming in from states, like Rajasthan, West Bengal and the larger masses are from different parts of Assam, like Jorhat, Silchar, etc. On an average day, we receive about 35 to 40 tourists, which can go up to more than 60 or so during weekends", informed Mihu.

Most tourists visit the Eze Park and the EzeRiver, so Mihu and his team are operating from outside the park.

Expectation from new president

As President Pranab Mukherjee completes his tenure, the whole nation will be hoping that newly elected president Ram Nath Kovind will continue the legacy of keeping president's office neutral and beyond politics. Former Bihar governor and one of the prominent leaders of greater Sangh Parivar, Ram Nath Kovind was recently elected as the new president of India. Even though he has an RSS-BJP background, Kovind will be expected to perform his duty as per Indian constitution. When Pranab Mukherjee was declared presidential candidate of UPA it took everyone by surprise. He was an influential member of Congress party and was expected to play critical role for party in the 2014 general election. During his tenure Mukherjee has done commendable job and always took decision within the boundary of constitution.

Even during political crisis which engulfed Arunachal Pradesh, many thought Mukherjee because of his long association with Congress will be sympathetic to the grand old party. But he acted as per the laid down norms and signed the order of imposing president rule in the state based on the recommendation of the govt of India. Keeping decades-long party affiliations aside, Pranab Mukherjee also came down hard on the Opposition over the continued logjam during the 2016 Winter Session of Parliament. The Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Left parties had come together to demand a debate on demonetisation under a rule that entailed voting. The government agreed to a debate, but was unwilling to vote on it. More recently, President Pranab Mukherjee spoke unequivocally against the mob violence. Hopefully president elect Ram Nath Kovind will follow the same path and be true president of every Indian.

Myanmar: India’s gateway to the East

Dear Editor,

When Indian and Chinese troops are continued stand-off near Sikkim-Bhutan-Tibet tri-junction, India rolled out the red carpet for Myanmar military chief Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing, who was recently visiting India. India has been concerned for long from the cross border activities of North-East insurgent groups that taking shelter in Myanmar. India also worried about China’s aggressive sway over Myanmar’s peace process. On the other hand they kept providing shelter, aid and weapons to NSCN-K, who is fighting for independence of Nagaland for decades from Sagaing region of North West Myanmar. The recent attack on pilgrimage of Amarnath yatra at Anantnag is a cowardly act supported by another unfriendly neighbour. Whirlpool violence in unrest Kashmir is caused by propaganda, falsification of non state terror. The increased incidence of drug abuse and unemployment in the valley are committed by radical Islamic terrorist. Despite all a closer relationship between Burma and India is not in China’s interest.

Myanmar is India’s strategic neighbours that share a 1,640-km-long border of India’s north eastern states. It has significance from various angles as the only member states of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with which have a common border. New Delhi's backing the military junta clouded the relation between the two neighbours. Now Myanmar looks to India for bilateral defence and security cooperation.  They now review check in balance on strategic dependence only on China. New Delhi is closely watching this opportunity which was dominated by China and Pakistan.  PM Modi took up India's foreign policy on Myanmar from where his predecessor Manmohan Singh had left. Myanmar is rich in energy and natural resources. India is yet to exploit its geographical proximity with Myanmar to the fullest. The annual trade between the two countries is minimal. And Russia provides training to Myanmar Army Officers. In June 2015, Indian army carried out operation near Indo-Myanmar border against NSCN (K). Is ULFA (I) in real trouble after NIA charge sheeted them recently? India is eyeing against counter insurgency operation and sharing intelligence on Islamic insurgents in Bangladesh- Myanmar border.

Myanmar is a key pillar of India’s Act east policy. Both the countries have shared history of colonisation by the British. Ahom are the descendants of the ethnic Tai people of Burma that ruled for six centuries. Myanmar also attached from the time of Buddha. It was said that the Chinese were exploiting Myanmar's own resources. Myanmar has finally realised after New Delhi kept distance from China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) Initiative, which hampered India’s sovereignty from the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. OBOR is now renamed as ‘Belt and Road Initiative' (BRI). India just cannot accept that ignores its core concerns on sovereignty and territorial integrity.  Asia's third largest economy India has one of the world's busiest shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean.

Delhi is already upset over China's refusal to allow it entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and refusing to block UN sanction on Masood Azhar, the Pakistan-based head of terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed. India is ready for intervening Chinese strategic inroads by expanding defence cooperation with ASEAN countries. India has already started dealing of military arms and equipments to Myanmar.  Indian army speeds up cooperation with Myanmar Army for patrolling of porous long border. Also Indian Navy warships undertake bilateral maritime boundary.

OBOR initiative is expected to cement China's dominance over Asia in coming decades. To counteract, India is trying to develop railway connectivity with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal. BCIM (Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar) Economic Corridor has just revived for consultation and academics. Beyond commanders meet and diplomatic talks, the General took time to visit the centre of Buddhist world Bodhgaya and placed keen interest on successful co-operative movement of Amul Dairy and Tata’s world cheapest car project Nano. It is high time that the two countries shed their past in a fresh ambience and strive for a better future. New Delhi needs to get closer to Nay Pi Taw to plug the loopholes as it has done successfully with Bhutan and Bangladesh. Myanmar is not just a little corridor for trade but a gateway to the South East Asian countries in the future. Is that India’s answer to China’s OBOR?

Yours,

Kamal Baruah,

Guwahati

A letter to the Chief Minister

Dear Editor,

Recently I read regarding our Civil Secretariat to be fully Wi-Fied, first of its kind in the whole nation and your live-stream declaration of bringing Itanagar under top 50 cleanest city of India from bottom. Daily you launch some new scheme and talk lot about technology to tackle the development of the state.  You clearly speak against the corruption and ill practices in the state and that’s highly appeasing. The respect and support for your govt. is sky touching while reading your acclamation or declaration on papers daily.

The clandestine admiration turns into dissatisfaction and sorrow as soon as one happens to walk, drive or travel trough the capital city and other parts of the state. The condition of the state capital proves all your achievements wrong and subtle.

We have only one highway connecting the twin cities. Here, a visitor faces crescendo, dwindling structures, pot-holes, layers of stinking garbage, unorganized buildings and ruptured roads all around. Problems of electricity water are prevalent in almost every colonies of the city. The condition of remote areas can be easily gauged by the condition of capital itself by any visitor.

As a concerned citizen, I wonder what your ministers are doing regarding all these basic issues. Don’t the ministers feel the way we feel? Every day 99% of your ministers and leaders drive in and out of this lone highway. The road side dumped garbage has become the centre of attraction for all.

I wonder whether the authority realizes the sudden upsurge in crime and social imbalances. I wonder whether they debate on our state’s poor literacy rate, poor medical facility and quality of life.

To be frank and to be true, most of the properties of the city belong to political leaders and bureaucrats. Most of the lavish vehicles honking for way even on the congested road belong to them.

All of us have travelled between Itanagar and Naharlagun at night. Wonder what will happen if your car stops midway between the twin cities during a dark cloudy night. You will see no sight of light out there. The whole road lurks in darkness as soon as the sun sets. Not even a single electric pole has electricity connection in it. It’s so risky to travel at night. That part of road needs modification, rectification and electrification. It’s so shameful that we are unable to maintain the only highway of the state.

Technological fitness is necessary but structural and administrative fitness is much more vital for a remote state like ours.

Yours,

A concerned citizen
